Rules

Article 1 - The International Music Competition « Jeunes Espoirs »2008 is open this year for:

Soloist Instruments: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Trumpet

Art. 2 - The competition is for musicians of all nationalities who have not yet reached the age of 13 on July 19, 2008.

Art. 4 - The public rounds of the Competition are preceded by a preselection round behind closed doors, based on the examination of applications (and the viewing/listening of videos/audios medium in case of dispensations cf. Art. 12, 13, 14, 15, 16):
Preselection: examination of applications.
Auditions: musical execution and interview with the Artistic Committee.
Semi- final: musical execution.
Final: musical execution.

Art. 5 – All rounds, except the preselection and interview processes are open to the public.

Art. 6 – The Artistic Committee and the Competition Direction establish the order in which candidates will perform.

ROUNDS AND PROGRAMS
Art. 7 - Auditions
Dates:
Session 1: July 19 – July 26, 2008
Session 2: July 27– August 3, 2008

Important: The Competition will organize the musical execution and the interview with each candidate between 2 – 4 days maximum, as much as possible. In order for each candidate to be in contact with a performing arts community and to encourage the sharing of experiences with professionals, Candidates may stay longer and may participate in or attend the master classes, “Masters” auditions, conferences, concerts and other activities proposed by the Academy.

Programme :
- Musical Execution: 15 minutes of free program. Several works of different styles. Candidates will perform 10 minutes of the program, chosen by the Jury.
- Interview with the Artistic Committee

The candidates who are selected for the semi-final will be informed beginning October 15, 2008.

Art. 8 - Master classes
Dates:
Session 1: July 19 – July 26, 2008
Session 2: July 27– August 3, 2008
Within the framework of the Academy, encounters are organized with musicians, Jury members with an international reputation. A registration form will be available online from May 2008 www.academiemusicale-valdisere.com

Art. 9 - Semi-final
Dates: December 1 - December 4, 2008
Venue: Val d’Isère Congress
Accompaniment: piano (cf. Art. 17)
Programme: 15 minutes of free program (the audition program performed in full).
Several works of different styles.

Art. 10 – Final
Dates: December 5 - December 7, 2008
Venue: Val d’Isère Congress
Accompaniment: piano (cf. Art. 17)
Programme: 20 minutes of free program, different from the preceding rounds.
Several works of different styles.

Art. 11 - General conditions concerning the programs:
- Candidates are expected to treat each performance as a recital or a concert and should therefore assemble their program with this in mind. The Jury will look at each performance as a whole.
- All works of each round will be performed from memory. A candidate may ask to perform some contemporary works using a score. The Competition has the authority to allow this.
- Repeats are left to the discretion of the candidates but they must take these into account in working out the timing of their programs.
- The Jury will reserve the right to shorten the performance of a candidate (for reason of timing, for example).
- Candidates may not include in their program self-composed works
- Arrangements composed by the candidates are not accepted.
- Candidates are expected to use the original scores of the works they perform. The competition cannot be held responsible for any fraud committed by a candidate in this regard (ex: public use of illegal copies).
By June 15, 2008, closing date for the submission of applications, the audition program may not be changed, except at the request of the Artistic Committee.
By November 3, 2008, the semi-final and final programs may not be changed, except at the request of the Artistic Committee.

 

VIEWING AND LISTENING OF VIDEO / AUDIO MEDIUM
Art. 12 - On the basis of a recording video/audio, on every numerical or analogical devices : DVD-Video, VHS (PAL or NTSC) DVD-Audio, CD, DVD-data…, candidates who live far from Val d’Isère and whose advancement can justify it, may be exempted from the first public round (audition), if they request it. The Competition is empowered to allow this dispensation. Consequently, some candidates might be invited to compete directly for the semi-final, in December. The interview will take place at this moment.

Art. 13 - The viewing/listening will take place in the presence of the Artistic Committee, in a studio that provides optimal quality of vision and sound.

Art. 14 - The program presented on the video or audio medium has to be the same as the program required for the audition (cf. Art. 7).

Art. 15 - The recording must mention the place and date of recording of each work.
It must also be accompanied by a document in which the candidate certifies its authenticity and the absence of technical manipulations or frauds.

Art. 16 - In the event of its poor technical quality making it impossible to view or listen to the video/audio medium, the Competition may request the candidate to submit a new copy as soon as possible.

ACCOMPANIMENT
Art. 17 – If candidates need a piano accompanist, they will have to inform the competition before June 15, 2008. Besides, they must state if they will be accompanied by the pianists designated by the Competition or by their personal accompanist.
The competition will not pay for the travel and accommodation expenses of the candidates personal accompanists.

APPLICATION
Art. 18 – To facilitate and hasten the data processing, the Competition recommends the submitting online of the application form, application fees and documents inherent to the application. All these documents can be downloaded on the website of the Competition. The website provides a secure payment of application fees.
It is still possible to send applications by registered post and to make transfers (Cf. Art. 19 and 20).

Art. 19 – Applications have to be sent before June 15, 2008 (postmarked June 14, 2008 at the latest for postal mails).

The parent or the guardian of the candidate must pay for the bank transfer fees.
The name of the candidate must be clearly mentioned on the bank transfer.
A proof of the transfer of the application fees will be included on the registration forms.
POSTAL TRANSFERS AND POSTAL ORDERS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

Art. 21 – The Artistic Committee is the only authority entitled to admit candidates. They will be informed individually. Applications must be complete and include all required information.

Art. 22 – Applications must include the following documents:
- The application form correctly completed, [Click here]
- 1 recent photograph (less than 300 ko),
- Copy of birth certificate, official identity card, or passport.
- Letter of recommendation from the teacher, especially written for the attention of the Competition,
- Curriculum vitae,
- Letter of motivation,
- Detailed program with exact timing,
- Repertory,
- Application fees – for the current edition,
        Soloist Instrumentalists: 70 euros.

In order to allow the Artistic Committee to judge the merits of an application, the candidates should enclose with their applications any document that might provide information on their abilities. For example : copies of diplomas, prizes or certificates awarded at other competitions, exams….
These documents will not be returned.

Art. 23 - The application becomes valid on receipt of the application fees. The application fees will not be reimbursed under any circumstances.

Art. 24 - Candidates who are selected for the auditions will be informed by the Competition beginning June 20, 2008.

JURY
Art. 25 – The number of Jury members is not limited. They are chosen for their international reputation in the musical field. The composition of the Jury can vary from one round to another.

Art. 26 – In relation to the choice of works and part of works to be performed by the candidates, it is the responsibility of the Jury to choose programs of «equivalent » nature and importance for every candidate.

Art. 27 - The complete list of members of the Jury remains confidential until the start of the Competition.

PRIZES AND AWARDS
Art. 28Total prizes, honours and awards distributed among laureates: 15 000 Euros
Monetary prizes, recordings C.D., concerts, engagements, scholarships… The Jury, in accordance with the board of the Competition, will have carte blanche to grant or not prizes and awards, as well as to give several prizes to one candidate. The artistic profile of candidates, their musical development, can also give rise to prizes not mentioned but inspired by the personal experience of the laureates. In this way, the Competition embodies the spirit of the Academy: to carry on a mission of general interest by supporting career projects thanks to the generosity of patrons and partners.

Art. 29 - The board of Director of the Competition is empowered to accept other gifts, scholarships and concerts offers on behalf of the candidates and laureates. A list of these benefits will be made known to the candidates and laureates in due course.
The Competition may, if it deems it advisable, grant cash allowances to unranked candidates.

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION
Art. 30 – Semi-finalists and finalists who don’t come from border countries of France will be reimbursed 50 % of their travelling expenses up to maximum 500 €, on presentation of written proof. The Competition may provide some scholarships for candidates who have difficulties in financing their travelling expenses. The latter will have to make a request to the Competition.

Art. 31 – The Competition will arrange free accommodation for candidates who request it, subject to availability, with families. These families cannot also provide accommodation for relatives or friends of the candidates. Partnerships with hotels will allow the Competition to propose special rates.
Semi-finalists and finalists will be provided free accommodations.

CONDITIONS GENERALES
Art. 32 - The candidates must be present at the days and hours mentioned on the notification to attend, unless prevented from doing so by illness or accident (musical execution and interviews).

Art. 33 - Laureates must personally attend the prize-giving ceremony. Should the laureates be absent, they will loose their prizes and awards, with the exception of illness, accidents or a major crisis.

Art. 34 – Laureates are required to take part in the closing concert arranged by the Competition. Candidates cannot lay claim to remuneration. Likewise, rehearsals and public rounds will not give rise to the payment of artists’ fees.

Art. 35 – Cession of rights
The performances can be recorded. Photographs and articles may be published.
By participating in the competition, the candidates and their piano accompanist cede to the Competition the right to record, reproduce, and arrange for the reproduction of their performances (Competition and concerts) on all existing or future medium, as well as the right to broadcast their performances by any radio, television, or internet means in France or abroad.

Art. 36 – During the auditions, the semi-final and final, candidates may be solicited by the press and be requested for photographic sessions. The Competition will inform the candidates of the dates and places of meeting.

Art. 37 – The candidates will dress appropriately for the rounds and ceremonies.

Art. 38 – The dates of rounds can be modified. The candidates who are concerned by modifications will be informed as soon as possible.

Art. 39 – The Competition has the authority to modify any point of these rules. In this particular case, Candidates will be informed as soon as possible.

Art. 40 – Candidates may not be rejected on any ideological, linguistic, political or racial grounds.

Art. 41 – In the event of disputes, only the French text of these rules is legally binding.
